Personal Development vs. Therapy: What's the Difference?
People often ask me: "Is what you do therapy?" It's a fair question — and the answer shapes everything about how we work together.
The short answer: no, it's not therapy. But that doesn't mean it's less meaningful or less effective. It just means it works differently.
What Therapy Is
Licensed therapy is a clinical service. Therapists are trained to diagnose and treat mental health conditions — depression, anxiety disorders, PTSD, and more. The work is often focused on processing past experiences, healing wounds, and managing symptoms.
It's essential work. And for many people, it's exactly what's needed.
What Personal Development Is
Personal development work starts from a different premise: you're not broken. You're a capable person navigating real challenges — pressure, identity, relationships, direction, purpose — and you want to move forward with more clarity and intention.
The work is present- and future-focused. We look at where you are, where you want to go, and what's getting in the way.
How to Know Which One You Need
- Are you dealing with a diagnosed mental health condition? → Therapy
- Are you functioning well but feeling stuck or unfulfilled? → Personal development
- Have you done therapy and feel ready to focus on growth? → Personal development
- Are you a teen or young adult figuring out who you are? → Either, or both
There's no shame in either direction. The goal is to get the right support for where you actually are.
